This 3-day safari is a perfect short getaway for travelers wanting to experience the highlights of Murchison Falls National Park without committing to a longer trip. In just three days, you’ll cover a thrilling game drive across open savanna, a boat cruise to the base of one of Africa’s most powerful waterfalls, and a hike to the top of the falls itself — a complete Murchison Falls experience packed into a tight, well-organized itinerary.
Your safari begins early in the morning with pickup from your hotel in Entebbe or Kampala. The drive north to Murchison Falls National Park takes approximately 5 to 6 hours, covering around 300 kilometers of Uganda’s changing countryside — from busy trading towns to open farmland and, eventually, the savanna landscapes of the park itself.
Many itineraries include a stop along the way at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, where you can track southern white rhinos on foot with an experienced guide — one of the few places in East Africa offering this close-up rhino walking experience. This is usually offered as an optional add-on, adding roughly 2 to 3 hours to the day.
You’ll enter the park in the afternoon through Kichumbanyobo Gate, with wildlife often visible along the access road as you make your way to your lodge. After checking in, you’ll have time to relax before dinner and an overnight stay near the park.

Day two begins early with a game drive across the Buligi Peninsula, the wildlife-rich savanna area located between the Victoria Nile and Lake Albert. This is prime territory for spotting Rothschild’s giraffes, elephants, buffalo, Uganda kob, and lions, with leopards occasionally seen as well. Early morning light makes this one of the best times for both wildlife viewing and photography.
After lunch back at the lodge, you’ll head to the river for a boat cruise along the Victoria Nile toward the base of Murchison Falls. This cruise is one of the most memorable parts of the entire trip — the river is lined with hippos, basking crocodiles, and abundant birdlife, including the chance to spot the rare shoebill stork.
The boat takes you right up to the base of the falls, where the full Nile River is forced through a gorge just seven meters wide before dropping 43 meters in a powerful, thundering cascade. The noise and spray at close range make this one of the most dramatic natural sights in Uganda.

On your final morning, you’ll head out for a short hike to the top of Murchison Falls, offering a completely different perspective from the boat cruise the day before. Standing at the edge of the gorge and watching the Nile crash through such a narrow gap is a powerful way to end your time in the park — equal parts thrilling and humbling.
For travelers wanting an even more dramatic view, some itineraries offer the option to walk across the suspension bridge near the top of the falls for an even closer vantage point.
After the hike, you’ll begin the drive back to Entebbe or Kampala, a journey of approximately 5 to 6 hours. You’ll arrive back in the city in the late afternoon or early evening, in time for an international departure flight or a final night before heading home.
