4 Days Tour with Golden Monkey in Uganda

Tour Overview

This 4-day tour is designed around one of Uganda’s lesser-known but equally rewarding primate experiences: golden monkey trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Tucked in the Virunga volcanic range in Uganda’s far southwest, Mgahinga offers a rare chance to track these playful, brightly colored primates against a backdrop of volcanic peaks, bamboo forest, and rolling hills. This itinerary combines golden monkey trekking with scenic drives, cultural encounters, and time at beautiful Lake Bunyonyi, making it an excellent short getaway for travelers who want something a little different from the standard gorilla safari circuit.

Tour Plan

Day 1: Entebbe/Kampala to Kisoro/Mgahinga Region

Your tour begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Entebbe or Kampala. The drive southwest to the Kisoro region, near Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, is long — approximately 8 to 9 hours, covering close to 500 kilometers — but it’s broken up by dramatic scenery as you pass through the rolling hills of southwestern Uganda, tea plantations, and terraced farmland climbing into the highlands near the Virunga volcanoes.

Along the way, many itineraries include a lunch stop in Kabale, a scenic town perched above Lake Bunyonyi, before continuing the final stretch to Kisoro. Alternatively, travelers with tighter schedules can opt for a domestic flight to Kisoro Airstrip, cutting travel time to under two hours.

You’ll arrive in the Kisoro/Mgahinga area in the late afternoon, with sweeping views of the three volcanoes — Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabinyo — that define this dramatic border region between Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Check into your lodge and enjoy dinner while resting up for the next day’s trek.

Overnight: Lodge near Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Day 2: Golden Monkey Trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Morning Briefing

After an early breakfast, you’ll head to the park headquarters at Ntebeko for a briefing with park rangers. Here, you’ll receive background information on the golden monkey troop you’re about to visit, along with safety guidelines for the trek ahead.

The Golden Monkey Trek

Golden monkeys are a rare and endangered primate species found only in the Virunga volcanic region, distinguished by their striking golden-orange fur, dark limbs, and highly energetic, acrobatic behavior. The trek takes you into the bamboo forest zone on the lower slopes of the volcanoes, where a habituated troop moves quickly through the canopy and undergrowth.

Compared to gorilla trekking, golden monkey treks tend to be shorter and less physically demanding, usually lasting between 1 and 3 hours round trip, though this varies depending on the troop’s location that day. Once located, you’ll spend up to an hour observing the monkeys as they leap between bamboo stems, forage, and interact — a lively, fast-paced contrast to the calmer gorilla experience.

Afternoon at Leisure or Optional Volcano Hike

In the afternoon, travelers can choose to relax at the lodge, taking in the volcanic scenery, or opt for a more active add-on such as a hike partway up Mount Gahinga or Mount Sabinyo for those wanting extended mountain views. A visit to the Batwa Trail is also a popular option, offering insight into the indigenous Batwa people’s traditional forest life and history in the region.

Overnight: Same lodge near Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Day 3: Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi

Morning Drive to Lake Bunyonyi

After breakfast, you’ll depart Kisoro for the roughly 1.5 to 2 hour drive to Lake Bunyonyi, one of Uganda’s most scenic lakes. Nestled among terraced hills and dotted with small islands, Lake Bunyonyi is a peaceful contrast to the volcanic drama of Mgahinga, and it’s often described as one of the most beautiful spots in Uganda.

Afternoon Activities on the Lake

Once settled into your lakeside accommodation, the afternoon is yours to enjoy at a relaxed pace. Popular activities include:

  • Canoeing on the calm waters of the lake in traditional dugout canoes
  • Island hopping, with visits to sites such as Punishment Island, which carries a notable place in local oral history
  • Nature walks along the lake’s terraced shoreline, taking in birdlife and scenic viewpoints
  • Simply relaxing at the lodge, taking in the cool climate and panoramic lake views

Lake Bunyonyi’s altitude keeps the air pleasantly cool, making it an ideal spot to unwind after the previous day’s trek.

Overnight: Lodge on Lake Bunyonyi

Day 4: Return to Entebbe/Kampala

After breakfast and a final morning to enjoy the lake, you’ll begin the long drive back to Entebbe or Kampala, retracing the route through Kabale and the southwestern highlands. The journey takes approximately 8 to 9 hours, depending on road conditions and stops along the way.

Some itineraries include a stop at the Equator crossing near Kayabwe on the final stretch, offering a quick photo opportunity and a chance to stretch your legs before continuing to the city. You’ll arrive back in Entebbe or Kampala in the evening, in time for an international departure flight or a final night in the city.
