5 Days Murchison Falls and Kibale

Tour Overview

This 5-day safari combines two of Uganda’s most rewarding experiences: the raw power and big-game scenery of Murchison Falls National Park in the north, and the lush, primate-rich rainforest of Kibale Forest National Park in the west. Together, they offer a well-rounded taste of Uganda — thundering waterfalls, Nile boat cruises, savanna wildlife, and up-close chimpanzee tracking — all within a single, well-paced itinerary.

Tour Plan

Day 1: Entebbe/Kampala to Murchison Falls National Park

Your safari begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Entebbe or Kampala. The drive north to Murchison Falls National Park takes approximately 5 to 6 hours, covering around 300 kilometers.

Along the way, you’ll pass through the Luwero Triangle and cross the Kafu River, with a stop at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary being a popular optional add-on for travelers wanting to track southern white rhinos on foot before continuing north — this can extend the day but is a highlight for many.

You’ll enter the park through Kichumbanyobo Gate in the afternoon, with a short game drive possible en route to your lodge as wildlife often appears along the access roads. Check into your lodge, either inside the park or along the Nile’s edge, in time for dinner and a restful night.

Overnight: Lodge in or near Murchison Falls National Park

Day 2: Full Day in Murchison Falls — Game Drive and Nile Boat Cruise

Morning Game Drive

Day two starts early with a game drive across the park’s open savanna, known as the Buligi Peninsula, located between the Victoria Nile and Lake Albert. This area is one of Uganda’s richest wildlife zones, home to large herds of Rothschild’s giraffes, buffalo, Uganda kob, elephants, and lions. Leopards are occasionally spotted, and the plains here offer some of the best game-viewing photography opportunities in the park.

Afternoon Nile Boat Cruise

In the afternoon, you’ll head to the river for a boat cruise along the Victoria Nile toward the base of Murchison Falls. This cruise is a highlight of the entire safari — the Nile here is thick with hippos, crocodiles basking on the banks, and an abundance of birdlife, including the rare and prehistoric-looking shoebill stork if you’re fortunate.

The boat brings you right up to the base of the falls, where you can watch and hear the full force of the Nile being squeezed through a narrow seven-meter gorge before plunging 43 meters down — a dramatic contrast to the calm river you’ve been cruising on.

Overnight: Same lodge in Murchison Falls National Park

Day 3: Top of the Falls Hike and Transfer to Kibale Forest

Morning Hike to the Top of the Falls

Before departing the park, most itineraries include a short hike to the top of Murchison Falls, offering a completely different — and arguably more thrilling — perspective of the same waterfall you saw from below the day before. Standing at the edge of the gorge, watching the entire Nile River force itself through such a narrow gap, is an unforgettable and slightly vertigo-inducing experience.

Long Transfer South to Kibale

From here, you’ll begin the journey south to Kibale Forest National Park, near Fort Portal. This is a long drive, typically 6 to 7 hours, passing through changing landscapes — from the northern savanna, through the Albertine Rift escarpment, and into the lush, hilly tea-growing region around Fort Portal.

Some itineraries break up this transfer with a stop at Kyenjojo or a tea plantation viewpoint along the way. You’ll arrive at your lodge near Kibale Forest in the early evening, with time to settle in before dinner.

Overnight: Lodge near Kibale Forest National Park

Day 4: Chimpanzee Tracking in Kibale Forest

Morning Chimpanzee Trek

Kibale Forest is widely regarded as the primate capital of East Africa, home to over a thousand chimpanzees along with several other primate species. Your day begins with an early breakfast followed by a briefing at the park headquarters at Kanyanchu, where rangers organize trekking groups and share background on the forest’s habituated chimp communities.

The trek itself takes you through dense, humid rainforest in search of chimpanzees, with sightings often accompanied by the loud, echoing calls that chimps use to communicate across the forest. Once located, you’ll spend up to one hour observing them feeding, grooming, and moving through the canopy — an energetic and often noisy contrast to the calmer gorilla trekking experience further south.

Along the way, keep an eye out for other primates including red colobus monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and blue monkeys, all of which are commonly seen in the forest.

Afternoon Bigodi Wetland Walk (Optional)

In the afternoon, many travelers add a guided walk through the nearby Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community-run reserve bordering Kibale Forest. This gentler activity is excellent for birdwatching, with over 200 recorded species, along with additional primate sightings and insight into local conservation efforts led by the surrounding community.

Overnight: Same lodge near Kibale Forest National Park

Day 5: Return to Entebbe/Kampala

After breakfast, you’ll begin the drive back toward Entebbe or Kampala, a journey of approximately 5 to 6 hours depending on road conditions and traffic closer to the city.

Depending on timing and flight schedules, some itineraries include a stop at a crater lake viewpoint near Fort Portal or a visit to a local market along the way. You’ll arrive back in Entebbe or Kampala in the late afternoon or early evening, in time for an international departure flight or a final night in the city.
